"The one and only." "I'm sorry to inform you, Mr. Mulder. But a Miss Scully was brought into the hospital about an hour ago. She was unconscious most of the time, in and out of fevers, and well, she has not in good shape. When we got her pretty much calmed down, she kept telling us to call you. The thing is, sir, she has been delirious the whole time so---" The man tried to finish, but Mulder had cut him off. "I'll be right there." Mulder was frantic. Ever since Scully told him about her cancer, he would worry even if she got a cold. But this was different, she was actually in the hospital-- and not for treatment. He kept asking nurses if they knew where they were keeping her. Until, finally, a doctor knew. "Room 314," the doctor told him. Mulder was kind of walking-running. The whole time questions and horrible answers overflowed his mind. Until he reached the room. There was a dead silence and yet you could hear a machine from inside the room. When he pushed open the door and looked inside, there she was. There was a tube in here nose, and an IV in here arm. Mulder had seen worse, but this was Scully. He felt like someone had just stabbed him in the back, the pain rushing in. Then he felt an incredible sadness, almost as if he had lost faith. He quickly shook that thought out of his head. Ms. Scully was there, too. She was sitting beside her daughter, holding her hand. You could tell what Ms. Scully had been doing her face was tear-streaked and her eyes were red. "Fox, I am glad you came. Dana has been asking for you, when she was awake." "I came as quick as I could. Is she doing any better?" he asked with growing curiosity. "She's calmed down. Just now started to get some sleep." At that moment, Scully's eyes opened. She was a little surprised to see Mulder there. Then her expression softened. "Mulder, how did you know I was here?" she asked in bewilderment. "Dana, you kept asking for the nurses to call him, said you needed to talk to him." her mother informed her. "Oh," she replied then she noticed that Mulder's eyes darkened when she said that. "Mom, can I speak to Mulder alone for a minute." And with that her mother, rose up from her chair, kissed her daughters' forehead, and left. Scully was sure that she sat down in the chair outside the door, and asked Mulder to shut it for her. She motioned for him to sit down beside the bed. "So, how do you feel?" he asked. "Well, that's the question, huh? I feel a little queasy, and I've been coughing a lot. Mulder, I'm all right, its probably just the flu. At the very worst pneumonia, nothing to do with the tumor." She coughed horribly for a while after that and managed a weak smile. "Okay," he said nervously he had his hands to his mouth and his forehead's fine wrinkles were showing. "What, did you need to talk to me about?" "We've both known each other for four short years. In that time we've been through a lot together. Mulder, your the only one I really trust, and I hope you feel the same about me. Even though I feel this isn't the end, I just want you to know that even if I haven't given up hope. The odds are good that I won't make it. I want you to continue, and not think that there was something you could do. You believe that there is truth and so do I. Just, I don't know. I'M trying to say I'll be with you no matter what. Dead or Alive" She wished so much that she could tell him what was really on her mind. But now wasn't the time. She wasn't so sure herself that she would make it through this hospital stay. "I know, I know. When the doctor called me, and no one knew where you were I was frantic. I thought you might slip away without me even being able to say anything. I know the odds are against us, Scully, but you still shouldn't think that way." He thought that how would he go on? "I don't want to lose you. I lo--" he was cut off by a nurse. "Just came in to check a few things." she said cheerfully. She checked Scully's blood pressure and temperature. She gave Scully some painkillers and then she was gone. After the nurse left the two just sat there for a while. Scully was thinking, ?What was he going to say? what was he going to say? I just wish I had the nerve to tell him.' Mulder started to think about what he was going to say, and decided that he couldn't start over. ?Hmmm, she looks like she's about to fall asleep. Those painkillers must work fast.' he thought. He reached over to take her hand. She looked over, he noticed her eyes were glassy. Then they darkened, and her arm went limp. "Good-night and she was asleep. Mulder sat there for a while watching her, he decided that he wasn't going to let her mom get to worried about being cut-off. So he kissed Scully on the forehead, like her mother had done, and left the room. Sure enough Ms. Scully was sitting outside the door, she had gone to get some coffee. Her hand was shaking. Mulder sat down beside her. "Ms. Scully, she thinks she's going to be okay. I want to think everything is okay, too. But...." "I think the same thing. She's always been strong yet stubborn. I just wish she would tell me, what's going on." She looked up at him with teary eyes, then wiped them away quickly. "She's asleep right now. Go in there, Ms. Scully. Maybe you can get some too." he managed a smile. He told her that he was going to get something to eat and would probably be back in a couple of hours. And that he didn't want to bother Dana anymore than he already had. And to call him if anything was going on. Then he left. Mulder was sitting at a nearby diner, eating a sandwich. He was really confused right now. He didn't know much about cancerous tumors, except what he had heard and what Scully had told him. He really wished that nurse hadn't walked in right when he was going to tell Scully how he felt. Mulder noticed a man at another table had left his newspaper behind. Mulder snatched it before anyone noticed. He needed something to clear his mind. Reality never really sat well with him. He didn't know how to handle it well. Nothing new was in the paper. Same old stories about what the President was doing, and an article about a local car wreck. Nothing out-of-the-ordinary, until he noticed that there was an obituary for a Dana K. Scully. He looked at it again. Then he noticed it was supposed to be tomorrow's paper. Then he looked at that twice. Yep, it said March 1, 1997. He looked puzzled, then frightened. His eyes changed from curious to wide. At first he thought, "No, I'm not seeing this. This can't be real. Can it?" Quickly, not to take any chances, he called the hospital. A woman's voice answered on the other end. "Give me room 314." he demanded. In room 314 there was Ms. Scully. All by herself, a doctor had came in and said that they needed to do surgery on Scully. Apparently, it was pneumonia and her lungs were filling up with fluid, and they were going to insert a tube to drain them. It wasn't supposed to be a major operation, unless there were complications. They would have someone call her if there were any, though. **Ring** Ms. Scully jumped when she heard the phone ring, she picked up carefully. Her hands were shaking she thought that it was someone about the surgery. "Hello?" she asked nervously. "Ms. Scully? Umm, is Dana awake?" "No, actually....they just took her to surgery. Why?" "You wouldn't believe me if I told you. I'm coming up there right now, just stay there." *Click.* He started towards the door, leaving the money he owed at the table. "Fox? Don't hang up. Fox?" Maggie sighed with frustration. She wondered what he meant by ?you won't believe me if I told you'. She started pacing nervously in the empty room. "Mrs. Scully, what exactly did they say?" Mulder asked. "There was two doctors. The one that was performing the surgery, said that it was a minor surgery. That it was pneumonia, and they were going to have to drain the fluid, and they would call if there was any complications. They expected none, though." she explained. "What did you mean by ?You wouldn't believe me if I told you' ?" she asked. Pulling out the article he had torn from the paper he explained, "This guy left a paper on his table, so I took a look at it. When I got to this..." "Oh my God!" she exclaimed while reading the obituary. "This can't be- Wait a minute why does it say she died yesterday?" "It's tomorrow's paper. I didn't believe it at first either, look at the date. It doesn't say how she dies, though." **Ring** The two looked at each other, they had figured out how she was going to die, before it had even rang. They knew the phone was going to ring, and they knew what was on the other line. "Hell-o?" Maggie's voice shaking. "Hello, Ms. Scully? Umm, after the operation.... It seems your daughter is dying. She's still conscious, if you want, we could allow you to see her. Like I said she was in recovery when it happened." "No!" she gasped quietly sobbing, "I mean yes I want to see her. I'll be right there." "Ms. Scully, was it about Dana? Is she okay?" He thought to himself ?What a stupid question!' Ms. Scully turned around slowly, "She's dying they said we could see her because she's in recovery right now." They both started for the door. Maggie and Mulder were at the Recovery Ward in maybe, thirty seconds flat. They had taken the stairs, instead. They asked a nurse down there where Scully was, she pointed to a room down the hall. When they came in, there was a nurse there checking on her. There was a respirator, tubes everywhere, and an EKG to her bedside. What a horrible sight, Scully's eyes were fixed on the ceiling, and her mouth was slightly opened. Maggie rushed to her daughter's side, she was crying harder, now than ever. Mulder's face looked like a lost puppy, his eyes were getting glassy. Scully, put her hand on her mom, and said, "Mom, I love you." She sighed she was running out of breath. She looked at Mulder and said, "I love you, too. Both of you." she sighed again, "Forgive me, Mulder. I guess I was a part of your life, too." She turned her head to look at her mom and mouthed out ?Bye'. Mulder quietly said I love you, too, but it was too late She was gone....forever. Maggie was kneeling by the bed yelling at anything and everything, until finally she gave up and cried on her dead daughter's stomach. Thank God her eyes were closed, Mulder would have never been able to take it if they were staring off into space. His eyes began to water. He couldn't believe that she was gone, dead. He felt a part of himself die that day. Not only was she his partner, his friend, his life, there was a place in his heart that was empty. Scully had filled that part, but now.... He couldn't, he wouldn't accept this. His head was swimming, until he just had to sit down, he started sobbing, too. The doctors came in after a while, they had decided before, that there was nothing they could do. Since they didn't know why she had died. Someone had ordered an autopsy done, but Maggie wouldn't let them. She put up a good fight, too. They decided since the law didn't really want to know why she died that the mother could decide if there was to be an autopsy or not. Ms. Scully set up a funeral, Mulder and his mom had helped, since Ms. Mulder had buried her former husband. The day of the funeral, there weren't many people there. Scully wasn't one of the best-known people on earth, you know. But it was a nice turnout. Mulder and his mom were there, Ms. Scully, Skinner, some friends of the family, even Agent Pendrell. And ?well what'd you know?' Mulder thought. Tom Colton was there, he thought he'd never see him again since that Tooms case. Colton had noticed Mulder when he walked in, but didn't say anything. He just glanced at him, and walked towards his former classmate. Nothing fancy. Towards the end, they were going to have the ?last kiss'. Apparently, it was a tradition, that the parents give it to the lost relative. Well, Ms. Scully decided since Dana's father couldn't be there for obvious reasons that Fox would have to fill in his place. Mulder was kinda surprised, and flattered, but he tried to hide that emotion. So, after some people had said what they knew about Dana, Maggie and Fox went up to the coffin. Maggie kissed her daughter on the head then cheeks. Mulder kissed Scully on the head, both cheeks and lips. Then for the first time Mulder suddenly realised that Scully was dead. His friend, his love, his everything....was gone. Reality came crashing over him like a wave. The pain he kept enduring was getting worse, until his head was swimming. The memories of a life past. Everywhere he looked he saw the two of them. In the basement office, where they had first met, where they dwelled on their journey. Then he saw the two of them in his apartment where they had seen each other after his near-death experience. The two of them in front of the x-rays, looking at the very thing that had cost them. The thing that wasn't supposed to happen. It was all his fault. His fault she was dead now. The last vision that came to him was when she had died in the hospital the other night. It was too much. Too much. He looked down at the lifeless corpse that was going to be shoved into the ground and all the men that had caused this would be happy. Happy that they had brought Mulder his truth. The truth, he thought, was supposed to be light on lies. How could I have been so arrogant? Arrogant and let another loved one die? All of a sudden Mulder screamed her name into the blinding void. He wasn't aware of the people around. All he could see was a... He turned there she was. Scully. As if it was a dream he saw his friend for the last time turn and look at him. A chill ran down his spine as she slowly dissapeared. Without a trace. Mulder couldn't take much more, he ran out of that building as fast as he could. He just ran and ran until he had reached nowhere. He had no idea where he was going but new what he had to do. Then he saw evil in its purest form. It was the Cigarette-Smoking Man. Mulder felt as if someone stabbed him in the stomach as he saw that demon smile. He was laughing at Mulder. With the glow of his cigarette, his teeth almost gleamed. Then as if he was commanding Mulder he mouthed out the words, ?Do it.' And with that Mulder thought, that he had to continue with Scully at any cost. He had to know. It was a definite gamble. Mulder had never had a religion, ever since that night Samantha was taken. And for the first time in ages he prayed to God. He prayed that Scully would be on the other side and that he would see her safe, for the first time. And the last. Then Mulder pulled out his gun, held the barrel in his mouth. There was the sound of a gunshot and silence. Only the sound of cars passing and the stink of dumpsters filled the air. The journey was over.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What do you think?
